ABOUT FOCUS ON RENEWAL
Formed in 1969 to focus on the needs of the community, adult education, youth intervention, and economic depravity, Focus On Renewal, (FOR) has been a beacon of hope to the Sto-Rox community for 40 years. Striving to meet the goals established for the citizens in Stowe Township and McKees Rocks, the center has grown through the years to surpass initial goals and today is a comprehensive full-service community center with satellite locations strategically placed throughout Sto-Rox.
FOR has enhanced the lives of those directly involved in the center and to those residing in the community, but not directly receiving services. Building upon the principles identified in the early days of its inception, the center has established itself as a refuge for healthcare, parenting classes, daycare, comprehensive family services from the senior population to young children and infants. The center has also been a means of financial support to those in need. One of the most widely used services of FOR is the credit union, formed also in 1969, with a staff of volunteers and $200 in total assets. It exists to provide financial assistance to those who would otherwise be left to seek help from traditional financial institutions, perhaps only to be turned away or forced to pay back exorbitant interest rates on monies borrowed at time of financial hardship. Today the credit union has a membership of 497, and assets totaling more than $380,000.
Since the beginning, the center has exceeded the community & staff's expectations to provide practical, well-managed comprehensive services to its clientel without leaving the boundaries of the community walls.
