AFRICAN AMERICAN CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS

AT RYAN ARTS CENTER

Our adult program on Sunday features a performance by the stunning Trevor C Miles | Trevor C. Dance Collective named “BRAVE”, as well as a performance by the renowned Anqwenique Wingfield | Opera Theater of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh Opera Theater, as they present select scenes from their work “A Gathering of Sons”. This performance takes us through the life of a young black man, white police officer, a pair of parents and a collection of spirits who watch over the world. The words an experience of both loss and gain, and an understanding of the beautiful life flowing within us all. 

Afterward, we will have a community discussion and close out with an AFROHEAT Dance Party with Smi Swigart!

Our youth program on Saturday features an immersive theater workshop with Jill Jeffrey | Gemini Children's Theater that will allow youth to create and perform their own mini-plays! We will also have face painting activities, and numerous vendors on site (AVON, local handmade jewelry, pottery and more) ! We will also be giving away a free semester of classes to one lucky guest!

ABOUT FOR... 

The Focus On Renewal Sto-Rox Neighborhood Corporation, or FOR for short, was founded 47 years ago.  What initially started as a health center to help the sick and disabled people in our community, has grown into a multi-faceted non-profit organization.  Currently employing 30 staff at 6 locations throughout McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, FOR aims to support the people in our community through programs for all ages aimed towards the development of healthy mind, body and spirit.  Our programs include the FOR Community Center's hunger programs, Workforce Development, the FOR Sto-Rox Library, The Father Ryan Arts Center, Positive Parenting Program and Family Foundations Early Head Start.

Focus On Renewal's community food bank serves hundreds of families every month. With free groceries distributed twice a week to families in need and a daily free hot lunch served on weekdays.  We support Feeding America's goal to end hunger in our community by 2025.
